What Is SEO? A Plain English Guide for Small Business Owners

What is SEO in plain English? Learn how search engine optimization helps local customers find your business on Google, and what actually matters.

Quick answer

SEO means making your business easy for search engines to find, understand and recommend. When someone types "plumber near me" or asks an AI assistant for a good bakery, SEO is the reason one business shows up and another does not. It is not magic, and it is not a trick. It is mostly clear information, set up in the right places.

What the letters mean

SEO stands for search engine optimization. A search engine is a tool like Google or Bing that looks through billions of web pages and picks the ones that best answer a question. "Optimization" just means improving something so it works better. So SEO is the work of improving your online presence so these tools pick you.

How Google decides who to show

Google wants to give people a useful answer fast. To do that, it asks three simple questions about every page and listing:

  1. Can I find it? Is the page open to Google, and is it listed in a way Google can read?
  2. Do I understand it? Is it clear what the business does, where it works, and who it helps?
  3. Can I trust it? Do other people, such as customers and other websites, say good things about it?

Everything in SEO fits into one of those three buckets. If you remember nothing else, remember that.

The three kinds of SEO

Website SEO is about the pages on your site. Each page should have one clear topic, a plain title, and helpful text. A page called "Emergency Boiler Repair in Leeds" is easier to match to a search than a page called "Services".

Technical SEO is the behind-the-scenes setup. It covers how fast your site loads, whether it works on a phone, and whether Google is allowed to read it. You can learn more in our guide to robots.txt and sitemaps.

Local SEO is for businesses that serve people in a certain area. It covers your map listing, your address and phone number, and your reviews. Our Google Business Profile guide walks through the most important piece.

What actually helps

Most small businesses can make progress with a short list of honest actions:

  • Write down what you do, in simple words, on your own website.
  • Give each service its own page.
  • Put your real address, phone number and opening hours everywhere, and keep them the same.
  • Ask happy customers for reviews.
  • Make sure your site loads quickly and looks good on a phone.
  • Answer common customer questions in short, clear articles.

None of this is secret. The hard part is doing it steadily, month after month.

What does not help

Be careful of anyone who promises "number one on Google in a week". Nobody controls Google's results, and quick tricks tend to backfire. Buying fake reviews, stuffing pages with the same phrase over and over, or buying piles of low-quality links can get a business pushed down or removed. Real SEO is slow, honest work.

SEO and AI assistants

More people now ask tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for recommendations. These tools also read the web. They tend to mention businesses that are described clearly, listed in many places, and talked about in a positive way. The good news is that the same habits that help Google also help here. We explain this in how AI assistants choose businesses.

How to start this week

Pick three small jobs and finish them:

  1. Search for your own business name and your main service. Write down what you see.
  2. Check that your Google Business Profile is claimed and complete.
  3. Read your homepage out loud. If a stranger would not know what you sell and where, rewrite the first paragraph.

Then repeat each month. Small steps add up, and results take time. A realistic timeline is covered in how long SEO takes.

Words you might hear

  • Keyword: a word or phrase people type into a search box.
  • Ranking: where your page appears in the list of results.
  • Backlink: a link from another website to yours. It works like a recommendation.
  • Organic: unpaid. Organic results are the normal results, not ads.

Questions people ask

What does SEO stand for?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. It means making your website and online listings easy for Google and other search tools to find, understand and show to the right people.

Is SEO the same as paid ads?

No. Paid ads are placements you pay for each time someone clicks. SEO is the work you do so your business shows up in the normal, unpaid results.

Can I do SEO myself?

Yes, many basics are simple: a clear website, a complete Google Business Profile and honest reviews. A specialist helps when you want to save time or when the technical parts get complicated.

Do I still need SEO if I have a social media page?

Yes. Social pages are good for staying in touch, but people who search for a service on Google usually land on websites and map listings first.
