Google Business Profile Guide: Set Up and Optimize Your Free Listing

A step-by-step Google Business Profile guide for small businesses: how to claim, complete and keep your free listing so local customers can find you on Maps.

Quick answer

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your business on Google Search and Google Maps. To use it well, claim it, verify it, fill in every section honestly and keep it fresh. For local businesses, this one listing often matters as much as the website, because it is what people see when they search "near me".

Why it matters

When someone searches for a local service, Google often shows a map with a short list of businesses. Google shows three in that main map box. Those listings come mostly from Google Business Profiles. If yours is missing or half empty, you are easy to skip. It also feeds the answers that Google's own AI features give about local places.

Step 1: Find or create your profile

Search for your business name on Google. If a panel appears with "Claim this business" or "Own this business?", click it. If nothing appears, go to Google Business Profile and add your business. Use a Google account that the business will keep, not a personal account of one employee who might leave.

Step 2: Verify it

Google wants proof that you are the real owner. Depending on your business, you may verify by a video call, a phone code, an email, or a postcard. Follow the steps and finish them. Until you verify, many changes will not show publicly.

Step 3: Fill in the basics exactly

Use the same details that appear on your website:

  • Name: your real business name. Do not add extra keywords, as that can get your listing suspended.
  • Address or service area: if customers visit you, show the address. If you travel to them, set a service area instead.
  • Phone and website: use a number you answer.
  • Opening hours: include special hours for holidays.

Small differences, like "Street" on one site and "St." on another, are minor, but wildly different phone numbers or old addresses can confuse people and search tools.

Step 4: Pick categories carefully

Your main category tells Google what you are. Choose the one that fits best, such as "Italian restaurant" instead of just "Restaurant". Then add a few extra categories for other things you really do. Do not add categories that do not apply.

Step 5: Add services and a description

List your services with short, plain descriptions. In the business description, say what you do, where, and who for, in a few clear sentences. Avoid hype and avoid stuffing in a long list of place names.

Step 6: Add real photos

Upload clear photos of your storefront, inside space, team (with permission), and your work. Use your own images, not stock photos. Fresh photos tell people and Google that the business is active.

Step 7: Collect and answer reviews

Reviews are a big part of how people choose. Ask happy customers to leave an honest review, and reply to every review, good or bad, politely. Never buy reviews or pay for good ones. We cover this in how to get more Google reviews honestly.

Step 8: Use posts and updates

You can add short posts about offers, news or events. Keep them factual and short. Treat them like a small notice board that shows you are open and active.

Keep it fresh: a monthly checklist

  1. Check hours, phone number and website link.
  2. Add at least one new photo.
  3. Reply to new reviews.
  4. Look at the questions people ask and answer them.
  5. Make sure no one has suggested a wrong edit.

Common mistakes

  • Duplicate listings for the same business confuse customers. Ask Google to merge or remove them.
  • Moving or changing hours without updating the profile.
  • Ignoring negative reviews. A calm, helpful reply can win trust.
  • Keyword stuffing the name. It can get the listing suspended.

Questions people ask

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile costs nothing.

Do I need a shop to have a Google Business Profile?

Not always. Businesses that travel to customers, like plumbers or cleaners, can list a service area and hide their home address.

Why is my profile not showing on Google Maps?

Common reasons are that it is not verified, the information is incomplete, or Google is reviewing a recent change. Check that verification is finished and that your details are accurate.

How often should I update my profile?

Check it at least once a month. Update hours for holidays right away, and add new photos and posts regularly.
