How AI Assistants Like ChatGPT Choose Which Businesses to Recommend

How AI assistants choose businesses to recommend: what ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity look for, and simple steps to make your business easier for them to find.

Quick answer

AI assistants choose businesses by reading the web and picking the ones that are clearly described, easy to verify and talked about in a positive way. They do not have a secret list. They pull from websites, map listings, reviews and other public pages, then write an answer. If your information is clear and consistent, you are easier to mention.

What an AI assistant actually does

Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answer questions in plain sentences. For some questions they use what they learned in training. For others, especially "best" or "near me" questions, they search the live web first and then summarise what they find. Perplexity, for example, shows its sources next to the answer.

The key point: they can only recommend what they can read and understand. If your business is hard to find or hard to describe, it is easy to skip.

The signals that seem to matter

Nobody outside these companies knows the exact recipe, so be wary of anyone who claims to. But a few things make sense and match how the tools work:

  • Clear descriptions. A page that says "We are a family-run roofing company in Austin that repairs and replaces shingle roofs" is easy to quote. A page full of slogans is not.
  • Consistent facts. Your name, address, phone number and hours should match on your website, your map listing and other directories.
  • Third-party mentions. Reviews, local news, directories and other sites that mention you act like extra proof.
  • Direct answers. Pages that answer a question in the first sentence are easy for an assistant to lift.
  • Open access. If your site blocks crawlers, the tools may not be able to read it.

Write for questions, not just keywords

People ask assistants full questions: "Who can fix a leaking tap on a Sunday in Dallas?" Your site can match this by having pages and short articles that answer real questions in plain words. Start each answer with the answer, then explain.

Here is a simple pattern:

  1. State the question as a heading.
  2. Answer it in one or two sentences.
  3. Add details, steps or prices in the lines below.

Our guide to writing blog posts that get found goes deeper on this.

Make the facts easy to read

Machines read pages less like people and more like lists. Help them out:

  • Put your services, areas and hours in plain text, not only in images.
  • Use clear headings such as "Services" and "Where we work".
  • Add structured data, a small bit of hidden code that labels your details. We explain it in schema markup explained.
  • Consider an llms.txt file, a short summary page written for AI tools. It is a new idea and not a guarantee, but it costs little.

Do not forget Google

Google's own AI answers and its map results draw from your Google Business Profile and website. Keeping that profile complete is one of the best things you can do for both normal search and AI answers. See our Google Business Profile guide.

What not to do

  • Do not fake reviews. Platforms are good at spotting them, and it harms trust.
  • Do not copy text from other sites. Original, specific writing stands out.
  • Do not trust promises like "guaranteed ChatGPT ranking". No one can guarantee what an assistant says.

A simple monthly check

You can test your own visibility for free:

  1. Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
  2. Ask five questions a customer might ask, such as "best dentist in my town" or "who does emergency electrical work near me".
  3. Write down whether you are mentioned, who is, and what sources appear.
  4. Repeat next month and compare.

Answers can change from one day to the next, so look for patterns over time, not a single result.

What to fix first

If you are not showing up, start with the basics: a complete business profile, a clear homepage, a page for each service and a steady flow of honest reviews. These are the same foundations covered in what is SEO in plain English.

Questions people ask

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

There is no simple way to buy a recommendation in the normal answers. The best path is to make your business clear, well described and well reviewed across the web.

Do AI assistants use Google?

Some use their own web search, and some use other search engines. Because sources differ, it helps to be visible in many places, not just one.

Is AI search different from SEO?

They overlap a lot. Clear pages, honest reviews and accurate listings help both. AI search adds a focus on short, direct answers that can be quoted.

How can I tell if an AI assistant mentions my business?

Ask the assistants the questions your customers would ask, such as the best service in your town. Write down the answers each month and see if they change.
