Quick answer

Local SEO is the work of making your business easy to find for people nearby. This checklist gives you 15 steps, in order. Do the first few and you will already be ahead of many local competitors. Tick them off one at a time, and come back to the list every few months.

Part 1: Your Google listing

  1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile. This is the free listing that appears on Maps. Our Google Business Profile guide shows each step.
  2. Choose the right main category. Pick the one that best describes your business, then add only honest extras.
  3. Fill in everything. Services, hours, phone, website, description and service area.
  4. Add real photos. Show your shop, team and work. Add new ones regularly.
  5. Keep hours up to date. Update holiday hours before the holiday, not after.

Part 2: Your website

  1. Put your name, address and phone on every page. A footer works well. Use the same wording as your listing.
  2. Give each service its own page. "Boiler repair" and "Bathroom fitting" should not share one page. Say where you work on each.
  3. Create a page for each area you truly serve. Only if you really work there, and write something useful about it, not the same text with the town name swapped.
  4. Make the site fast and phone-friendly. Most local searches happen on phones. Test your site on yours.
  5. Add a map and clear directions on your contact page.

If you are building or redoing your site, see pages every local business website needs.

Part 3: Trust and mentions

  1. Ask for reviews the right way. Ask real customers, make it easy, and reply to every review. No buying or rewards. See how to get more Google reviews honestly.
  2. Fix your citations. A citation is any online mention of your name, address and phone number. Search for your business on major directories and your industry's sites, and fix any wrong or old details.
  3. Join local groups. Chambers of commerce, trade bodies and local sponsorships often give you a real link and a real mention.

Part 4: Labels and tracking

  1. Add local schema. This is code that labels your details for search tools. Read schema markup explained.
  2. Check your results monthly. Search your main services from a few spots in town, note where you appear, and write it down.

How to work through the list

Do not try to finish everything in one weekend. A sensible order:

  • Week 1: steps 1 to 5 (your listing).
  • Week 2: steps 6 and 7 (your site basics).
  • Week 3: steps 9 and 10, plus start asking for reviews.
  • Week 4: citations, schema and your first check.

Common local SEO mistakes

  • Different phone numbers on different sites.
  • A fake address, such as a virtual office or a rented mailbox, when you have no staff there. This can get a listing suspended.
  • Many near-identical town pages with copied text.
  • Ignoring reviews, especially bad ones.
  • Forgetting to update after moving, changing hours or changing phone numbers.

What results to expect

Local changes can show up faster than other SEO work, but there are no promises. Some fixes, like correcting your hours, appear soon. Rankings and reviews build over months. For a realistic view, see how long SEO takes.

What about AI assistants?

When people ask an assistant for "the best electrician near me", the answer draws on the same listings, reviews and website text this checklist improves. So this work helps on both fronts. More on that in how AI assistants choose businesses.

A quick self-test

Before you finish, answer these:

  • If I search for my main service plus my town, do I appear on the map?
  • Do my listing and website show the same phone number?
  • Did I reply to my last five reviews?
  • Does each service have its own page?

Any "no" tells you where to begin.
