SEO & AI Search · 3 min readSchema Markup Explained: Help Google and AI Understand Your Business
Schema markup explained in plain English: what structured data is, why it helps Google and AI tools understand your business, and how to add it safely.
Schema markup is a small piece of code that labels the facts on your page so search engines and AI tools can read them without guessing. Think of it as sticky notes on your website that say "this is our phone number" and "these are our opening hours". It does not change how the page looks to visitors.
Why labels help
A person can look at a page and tell that "Mon–Fri 9–5" means opening hours. A computer has to guess. Guessing can go wrong. If a page lists a price, a date and a phone number near each other, a machine may mix them up.
Schema markup removes the guesswork. It uses an agreed vocabulary from a project called Schema.org, which search engines such as Google and Bing support. You write the facts once in a standard format, and every tool reads them the same way.
What it looks like
The most common format is called JSON-LD. It sits in the page's code and is a short list of labels and values. For a made-up bakery it would say: type is LocalBusiness, name is Example Bakery, telephone is 555-0100, address is 12 Main Street, Springfield. That is an example only. You do not need to read the code fluently. What matters is that each fact has a label, and the facts match your real business.
Types that matter for small businesses
- LocalBusiness (or a more specific type, like Restaurant or Dentist): your name, address, phone, hours and area served.
- Organization: the basics about your company, including logo and social profiles.
- Service or Product: what you sell, with a short description.
- FAQPage: questions and answers that appear on a page. Only mark up questions that are actually visible on the page.
- Article: for blog posts, with title, author and date.
- Review or AggregateRating: only if the reviews are real and shown on the page. Google has rules about this, so read them first.
What schema can and cannot do
It can:
- Help Google understand who you are and what the page is about.
- Make a page eligible for extra display features in results, though Google decides when to show them.
- Give AI tools clean, labelled facts to read.
It cannot:
- Rank a weak page higher by itself.
- Replace good content.
- Fix wrong information. If the facts are wrong, the labels make the mistake clearer.
How to add it
- Decide what each page is. Your homepage might be an Organization or LocalBusiness. A service page is a Service. A blog post is an Article.
- Gather the real facts. Name, address, phone, hours, services. Copy them from your Google Business Profile so they match.
- Add the markup. Many platforms, including WordPress with a plugin, can generate it. You can also paste a JSON-LD block into the page.
- Test it. Use Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator. Fix any errors it lists.
- Recheck after changes. If you change your hours or phone number, update the markup too.
Rules to follow
- Mark up only what is on the page. Do not label things visitors cannot see.
- Be truthful. Fake ratings or invented reviews break Google's rules and can lead to penalties.
- Keep it consistent. Your name, address and phone should match your Google Business Profile and other listings.
- Do not copy-paste another business's markup without changing every detail.
Schema and AI search
AI assistants read the web in text. Clean labels give them more confidence about who you are and what you offer. Combined with clear writing, it is one of several signals discussed in how AI assistants choose businesses. It is not the only one, and no one can promise a particular result.
Where to start
If you only do three things, do these: add LocalBusiness markup to your homepage, add Article markup to blog posts, and test each with a free tool. You can also include the markup as part of a wider local SEO checklist.
How Social Buzz can help
We add and test schema markup as part of our technical SEO work, make sure the facts match your listings, and recheck it when your site changes. See our SEO and AI search service or email info@social-buzz.app.
