What is llms.txt? A plain guide to this short file that explains your business to AI tools, what it can and cannot do, and how to write one yourself.
llms.txt is a short text file on your website that explains your business to AI tools in plain language. It lives at an address like yourdomain.com/llms.txt and lists who you are, what you do and which pages matter most. It is a proposed idea, not an official rule, so treat it as a small helper rather than a magic switch.
Where the idea came from
Web pages are built for people. They have menus, pop-ups, sliders and long layouts. An AI tool trying to read your site has to dig through all of that to find the useful parts. In 2024, a proposal suggested a simple fix: give AI tools a clean, short page that says what the site is about and links to the best content. The file name, llms.txt, is short for "large language models", the type of software behind assistants like ChatGPT.
Be honest about what it does
This is important. As of writing, llms.txt is a proposal. Not every AI company has said it reads these files, and no one can promise it changes what an assistant says about you. Some tools may use it, some may ignore it.
So why make one? Because it is cheap, it forces you to describe your business clearly, and that description is useful in other places too. Even if no tool read the file, the writing exercise would still improve your website and listings.
What goes inside
A good llms.txt is plain text, written in a simple format called Markdown. Here is the basic shape:
- A title line with your business name.
- A one or two sentence summary.
- A few short sections with links to your key pages and a line about each.
Here is an example for a made-up business. Here is how the file might read, shown as plain lines:
- Title: Green Leaf Cleaning
- Summary: Green Leaf Cleaning is a home and office cleaning company in Portland, Oregon. We use plant-based products and offer weekly, one-time and move-out cleans.
- Services section: a link to the home cleaning page (regular and one-time cleans for houses and flats) and a link to the office cleaning page (evening cleaning for small offices).
- Practical info section: a link to the contact page (phone, email, service area, opening hours).
(That is an example only, not a real company.)
How to write yours in an hour
- Write your summary. Say who you are, what you do, where you work, and who you help. Two sentences.
- List your top pages. Choose 5 to 10: main services, pricing or how pricing works, about, contact, and your best helpful articles.
- Add one line per link. Say what the page covers in plain words.
- Keep facts accurate. Use the same name, address and phone number you use elsewhere.
- Save it as llms.txt and upload it to the top level of your website.
- Check it. Type yourdomain.com/llms.txt into your browser. You should see the text.
If your site is built on a platform that does not let you upload a file to the root folder, ask your web person or the platform's support how to add one.
Common mistakes
- Marketing fluff. "World-class solutions" tells a machine nothing. Use facts.
- Out-of-date links. Broken links make the file less useful. Check it when you change your site.
- Hiding things. Do not put anything in llms.txt that is not true on your site.
- Treating it as a fix for a weak website. If the pages it points to are thin, the file will not help much.
llms.txt, robots.txt and sitemaps
These three files sound alike but do different jobs:
- robots.txt says which parts of your site crawlers may visit.
- sitemap.xml lists your pages so crawlers can find them all.
- llms.txt gives a human-readable summary for AI tools.
Our guide to robots.txt and sitemaps covers the first two. Make sure you are not accidentally blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt, or they may never see your file or your pages.
Where llms.txt fits in the bigger picture
The things that most clearly help AI tools find you are still the basics: clear pages, consistent facts, honest reviews and good listings. See how AI assistants choose businesses for the full picture, and schema markup explained for another way to label your details.
Add llms.txt after you have fixed those, not instead of them.

Questions people ask
What is llms.txt?
It is a short text file placed on your website, at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, that summarises your business and points to your key pages in plain language for AI tools.
Will llms.txt make ChatGPT recommend me?
No one can promise that. It is a proposed convention, and AI companies have not all said they use it. Think of it as a low-cost helper, not a guarantee.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. Robots.txt tells crawlers what they may visit. llms.txt is a summary that tells AI tools what your business is and where the best pages are.
How long does it take to make one?
A simple version takes about an hour. You write a short description, then list your main pages with one line each.
